stunning explosion of blue, orange, and black, Centerbeam
was commissioned in 1978 to celebrate a Washington festival of kinetic
sculpture performances in the sky. The festival also featured Centerbeam,
a light sculpture conceptualized by Piene. Lithographs were created
in three different editions: without text, with text, and in miniature
form (miniatures not available).
Otto Piene (b.1928, Westphalia, Germany) is an internationally acclaimed
artist who studied in Munich, Düsseldorf, and Cologne. In addition
to being a painter, light sculptor, designer, and environmental
artist, Piene is director of the Image Resource Lab at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He has exhibited at the Tate Gallery in
London, the Kunstmuseum in Dusseldorf, the Museum of Modern Art,
the Guggenheim Museum, and the Jewish Museum in New York. His work
is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie
Institute, the National Gallery of Art, the National Gallery of
Canada, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Holland.
