| Christo
developed an interest in learning how exhilarating group efforts
can be and how to gauge dimension of art works on a landscape-sized
scale. His studies continued in Prague under the avant-garde Czech
theatrical director Emil Burian, who introduced him to modern art.
Further education was spent in Vienna, Geneva, and Paris where he
began wrapping his assemblages in resin-steeped cloth.
By the early 1960s, Christo was wrapping larger inanimate objects
as well as live women in layers of semitransparent plastic. His
work took on a monumental size after moving to the United States.
Valley Curtain at Rifle Gap in Colorado, Running Fence
in Sonoma and Marin counties, California, Wrapped Walkways
in Kansas City, Missouri, and Surrounded Islands in the
midst of Miami's Biscayne Bay are a few of the his earlier works.
Born in Bulgaria on June 13, 1935, he was christened Christo Vladimirov
Javacheff. As a teenager, Christo's parents encouraged him to enroll
in the Sofia Fine Arts Academy which offered a broad range of fine
art curriculum including: painting, sculpture, architecture, and
stage design.
