Menchu was commissioned by The Smithsonian Associates to commemorate
a 1993 event honoring the Year of the Indigenous Peoples' Rights.
Carlo Mejia's Mayan influence and interpretation for this offset
lithograph were befitting of this event because Nobel Peace Prize
Laureate Rigoberta Menchu, a Quiche-Mayan human rights activist
from Guatemala, was the guest.
Carlo Mejia (b. San Salvador, El Salvador, 1945) is a surrealist
painter who draws on stories passed down to him by his grandparents
when he was growing up in San Salvador. Mejia often uses non-traditional
media to symbolize the myths and stories of his Mayan heritage.
